Day 14 - Reputational Comparisons Can Kill You!
Today I learned that comparing yourself to others can damage your self-esteem and your sense of reality. As I write this, I've got 212 followers on Twitter. That's a HUGE leap on the 50 I had just six days ago - over 400% increase!
Then I look at thousands of people with 10X, 100X, 1000X 10,000 the followers I have, and it all seems so ...small!
It's overwhelming to see what some people are doing and how far ahead of the game they are compared to you. Unless you're leading the field, it's a constant game of catch up.
I look on Ecademy and I'm ranked 5148 in the UK. That means there are THOUSANDS of more connected, more active and more successful people than me. Or does it?
A great mentor Nigel Risner once taught me that if you're going to compare yourself to someone else, compare all of you to all of them!
Some people that seem more popular or more successful than you would give their right arm to have some of the things in their life that you have. It could be where you live, it could be your wonderful relationship with your partner, or the freedom and independence you have because you don't have a partner. It could be your advanced age, with all the experience and track record that that brings, or the youth and energy that it brings. It could be your bank balance or your health.
When you compare yourself to others, there's usually always something to envy or something to gloat about.
So as I'm building my online profile in this 90 day experiment, I'm mindful to focus on me, what I can do and what I do best. I've got to do it my way. Perhaps a little competition helps. Perhaps setting some personal goals helps. I've laid out what I want to achieve on three social networking sites, and I'll show you that tomorrow.
- When you compare yourself to others seemingly further down the road than you, it can cause resentment and envy.
- When you compare yourself to others on the same level as you it can cause aggression, competition and a scarcity mentality.
- When you compare others below or behind you, it can cause arrogance, complacency and gloating.
None of these are good. Build YOUR reputation. It's one of only three things your competition cannot replicate or duplicate! The other two are YOU and YOUR RELATIONSHIPS...
