Day 4 - Crossing the Social Media Chasm!

chasmsIt's Day 4 in my 90 day experiment with social media. I'm looking at what can be achieved in building a reputation online by putting a concerted and focused effort into mastering social media.

My Amazon bestselling book How to Build Your Reputation was very much about the real world - what to do and how to be so that people rate youhighly. it didn't say much about the online world. Which is why I'm out to master that realm to 'square the circle. However, it's not easy!

Ecademy Blackstar and leading coach Nicole Bachmann told me about the 'social media chasm'. It's that GAP of both learning and effort that you need to cross before you begin to reap the benefits of the many online networking tools and sites out there.

For instance, I've spent a day in training with Ecademy founder and social media thought leader Penny Power. I've spent a day updating all my profiles on the following sites:

www.ecademy.com www.linkedin.com www.facebook.com
www.flickr.com www.friendfeed.com www.viadeo.com
www.skype.com www.twitter.com www.youtube.com

And I've spent many hours in my first week learning the tools, the applications and the possibilities.

The world of social media can be a bit daunting for the 'older generation' of internet migrants who grew up without computers in every home and every school. The natives are those who have never not known the internet.

So what am I saying? Yes, it's hard work keeping up with things. It's hard work checking in. It's hard work maintaining and contributing to a network. But everything is difficult before it becomes easy!

It starts with a decision! Make the decision to embrace the future. Could be a paradigm shift for you like it has with me. But make the decision. Then back that decision with action, whatever action looks like for you. It may not be the 2 hours I'm spending a day on it. But it's something.

Make a start today!
