Day 9 - Do 'Followers' Mean You Have a Reputation?

question-markI've been working today with my business coach, Robert Umpleby, who just happens to be one of the highest ranked twitter exponents in the country. He's got more than 10,000 followers. Social media guru Thomas Power has more than 9,000 followers. Now what does this mean?

  • If you have a high number of followers or friends mean you are popular?
  • If so, does such popularity mean you have a compelling reputation?

In both the offline and the online world,.the strategy for survival is visibility. As i often say, it's no good being the best kept secret in the world!

Being visible means people can see what you're doing. You can create your tribe, as Seth Godin says. You shape your audience, create your followers, hone your message and cement your popularity.

We're 9 days into my 'Zero to Hero' experiment investigating what can be achieved with an online reputation by applying sustained pressure and contribution on social media.

It's throwing up more questions than answers! I'll be interviewing them both for this blog over the next few weeks.

To make gains with twitter, I've made two goals today for my twitter strategy:

  1. Own the word 'reputation'.
  2. Become the number one ranked 'Rob Brown'. I have 50 followers, and the leading Rob Brown has 250. Game on!
